Joan Stuart Ross
Artist's Statement
My work in encaustic, oil, and print, layers up and digs down to find a hidden path to meaning. Repetitive shapes and marks cross the surfaces like shorthand
messages; they cover what lies underneath—the “play within a play.” What is on the surface is not the only story.
Adding and scraping away layers of color express the art object as a reliquary
of personal and universal information. Sometimes the visual narrative unfolds
like the leaves of a book or a diptych, with a spine--vertebrae. Each mark’s independent energy and color fields express states of mind, matter, and gritty surprise.
Ancient Greco-Roman painting, sculpture and drawing, Asian calligraphy and
Joseph Albers’ color theory influence my work. Lately I have been captivated
by the illumination and levitation of the light, water and landscape in southwest Washington state.
