Artist's Statement

My approach to photography was sealed indelibly when a taxi-driver and photographer in Bali, Indonesia, remarked that my photos seemed to “lack a human element”, which was essential in his philosophy of life. I attempted to prove him wrong with most of my work ever since. The way to do so was strongly influenced by masters like Cartier-Bresson, and by Alex Webb the color wizard, whom sometimes I tried to emulate. I also search for symmetries, the warm evening light, a mysterious or surreal feeling, irony, and sometimes for evidence of “romance” in everyday life. The locale most likely to reflect these feelings is undoubtedly “the café”, a microcosm which reflects life like a repetitive mirror, where all feelings and situations can be visualized. What dominates this search is the finding of subtleness and nostalgia, a foreign feeling, and the ashes of a past long-gone.

A liberal in everyday life, I am a conservative in what concerns photography and I use film and Leica manual cameras exclusively. The color prints are all “Cibachrome-Ilfochrome” prints of high contrast and brilliance, resistant to fading, and most B&W images have been printed in Paris by a traditional lab or by myself on Fiber paper.

My work has been shown in local galleries in the Seattle area, especially at Patricia Cameron’s Fine Art and at Meany Hall at the University of Washington, were I was an invited artist for several years, as part of a group of University professors who do Photography.
